Spring Spruce Up - Quick ways to Freshen your Den / Family Room

Next up in our Spring Spruce Up series we are talking quick ways to freshen up your family room or den space. The den is a place where you and your family gather, where the main goal is for it to be comfortable and inviting. Check out our tips below to give this space a refresh!

Update Your Pillows
Polka Dots & Rosebuds Interiors
One easy and impactful way to update your family room is to update your throw pillows. Throw pillows are meant to be updated and refreshed every couple of years if possible. This is an easy change to make and a necessary one as the patterns and colors that you selected for your space a few years back, is most likely not what you are going to be drawn to now. Places like homegoods are a great resource for throw pillows because they have trendy as well as classic options all at very reasonable prices!

Add in New Accessories

Another quick way to freshen and update your family room or den is by adding in or replacing some of your accessories throughout. This is another place where the pieces you bought maybe 5 years ago are no longer your favorite things to have on display. It is also another inexpensive way to add to your space since you can find great accessories at any price range.

How about an option for freshening your space that wont cost you a dime?! Try simply rearranging the existing furniture you have in your family room for a quick and easy refresh. While this wont work in every space, it is always worth a try to see if there is a different layout that will work to give a new feel.

Spring Spruce Up - Quick ways to Freshen your Kitchen

As we continue our Spring Spruce Up series, we move right along into the kitchen. This is a place where we spend so much of our time, yet somehow it can turn into the last place we think about when it comes to updating our decor. Below are few quick ways you can freshen up your kitchen’s decor!

Countertop Accessories

Polka Dots & Rosebuds Interiors

Your kitchen countertops are crucial workspaces that need to be functional and left mostly open and clean. This is not to say that your functional items like fruit/bread baskets and other containers shouldn't reflect the design style that runs through the rest of your house. These are items that can make a huge difference in your space once you update them!

Art Work

Art is another thing in your kitchen that can stay the same for years on end while you walk past it everyday not thinking twice about the impact that changing it would make. There are so many different directions you can go with the art you choose for your kitchen. If you are one who likes for your art to have a kitchen like feel, there are so many fun updated options out there that can be just what your kitchen needs to add a little spark of interest. We do suggest sticking with pieces that are easily cleanable for any possible messes that may occur.

Cabinet Hardware Swap

Lastly, a quick and inexpensive way to spruce up your kitchen is by swapping out your cabinet and drawer hardware. This swap could be from an outdated brass to a clean brushed nickel or a standout oil rubbed bronze. Or maybe you are happy with your current hardware’s finish but want to switch up the style, this is a great option as well!

Shower Curtain

When taking on a bathroom update, one of the most cost effective and impactful changes to make is updating your shower curtain. When it comes to choosing a curtain, we usually suggest staying away from anything too theme oriented like a beach scene or nautical items. The main reason we suggest staying away from these is because it is easy to tire of these overly themed pieces. This isn't to say you can’t still have a nautical or beach vibe in your bathroom, you can just incorporate it in more subtle ways like artwork that are easier to swap out over time.

Bathroom Accessories

Updating your bathroom accessories is another quick way to freshen up your bathroom this Spring. When we say accessories that can be a whole range of items including everything from toothbrush holders, to trays, to your toilet paper holder. We tend to think of these items as very functional so it can be easy to overlook the style they can add to your space. You will be amazed at what updating items like these can do for the overall look and feel of your bathroom!

Spring Spruce Up - Quick Tips to Update your Bedroom

Spring is now in full bloom, and with that comes the overwhelming feeling of wanting to freshen  and spruce anything and everything in your home. This prompted us to start a Spring Spruce Up series where we will share quick and easy tips on updating different spaces in your home! This week we are kicking it off with tips on updating your bedroom.

Bedding
Polka Dots & Rosebuds Interiors
Bedding is one of the first things you see when you walk in your bedroom and very well may be the most amount of color or pattern in your whole space. So why is it that we hang on to the same old bedspread or duvet for years and years even though we aren't as in love with it as we once were? One reason is because most people want to spend their money on places in their home that guests will see the most like their living or dining room. While these areas are important to place your attention on, your bedroom is equally as important. You will be amazed at how you feel when you update your bedding because it can make it feel like a totally new space!

Window Treatments

Window treatments are another area that can stay the same for years and become a stagnant area in your bedroom. Maybe you have some older more traditional feeling treatments in your room and the rest of your pieces have changed over time to a more transitional vibe. Updating your window treatments to something fresh and current can do WONDERS for your space! Always remember to go higher and wider than the window itself to create a larger and more open feel instead of staying right along the window trim.

The Colors of Spring - How to Decorate with Floral Patterns

Start Small
studio-mcgee.com
When it comes to introducing florals into your decor, start with just a little here and there. Things like a simple throw pillow, or a piece of art are a good way to add florals to your space without feeling overwhelmed by them. Florals have gotten a bad wrap in the past for feeling a little “grandma-ish” so for some, it will take time to get that perception out of their heads.

Try Floral Wallpaper (Gasp!)

Can you believe I said it? Floral wallpaper? Thats right, in the right space it can work beautifully! Don't be concerned, these are not the florals of the past I am talking about. These florals are both chic and on trend. Some places to appropriately use floral wallpaper is in a nursery or as an accent wall.

When in Doubt, Go Large-Scale
studio-mcgee.com
One of the things we picture when we think old, outdated florals are tiny patterns. This was part of the problem that added to our distain for these patterns. The new florals that are back and better than ever are mostly large scale patterns which differentiates them from the others. These photos show two great examples of large scale florals that added to the spaces in a major way.

The Colors of Spring - How to Decorate with Pink

Here at Polka Dots & Rosebuds we have a special place in our hearts for the color pink. We have the pleasure of working with Sororities across the country on their spaces and some of them have pink as one of their main colors. As you can imagine, we have A LOT of fun working this color in!

Not only is pink a fun and feminine color that fits in perfectly at a sorority house, but it is also one of the gorgeous colors we get to see all around us during Spring time. This prompted us to share snap shots from some of our favorite projects where we could work in the color.

Although these are all examples where we used pink in a big and bold fashion, that certainly does not mean it can’t be worked in in a more subtle way. When you are living in a home with other members who may not be as open to pink everywhere, small subtle pieces here and there is always an option as well.

The Colors of Spring - How to Decorate with Yellow

Polka Dots & Rosebuds Interiors

Continuing on with our Colors of Spring series, we move on to the always cheery yellow. Yellow is one of those colors that can often be forgotten about when deciding what to implement in your decor. People can be a little stand offish about incorporating this color in fear that it will be to bold or overwhelming to a space. This is why using yellows in small and subtle ways is the best way to go.

All of these photos show examples of how you can add in yellow with things like accessories, throw pillows, faux florals, and even small pops in furniture. Colors that pair well with yellow include grays, white, and blues. It can really add that punch of cheer that you didn't realize the room needed.
