School’s Out! Three Ways to Set Up a Kid’s Room for Summer Fun

Create a Reading Corner / Nook
thesweatmanfamily.com
Reading is such an important activity for kids to do on a regular basis, especially through the Summer months while they are out of school. This can be difficult for some kids to get excited about if they don't have a pleasant, dedicated area in their room or in the house to read. When you create a cozy corner or nook for your child to read, it becomes a fun and comforting experience instead of feeling like a chore! These are 3 great examples of different ways to go about setting up an area like this for your child.

Set Up an Art Station

Art is another awesome activity for kids to do throughout the summer. While it can be a lot of fun, it can also create a bit of a mess and become something you don't want to deal with. Setting up a dedicated area for art and other creative projects is a fantastic way of making sure the area stays clean and organized! This helps keep any mess to one small area, as well as giving a home to the specific art tools so they don't end up scattered everywhere. You can go as elaborate or simple as you would like with this space!

One of the easiest ways to set up your child’s room for summer fun is by getting baskets or bins that are meant to store any number of different categories of toys and other items. These three examples show great ways to incorporate these baskets or bins into your child’s room. Furniture units with built in nooks for such items are a fantastic option!

Decor for a Late Summer Outdoor Party

Although Summer is coming to an end, the weather is still plenty nice enough to enjoy your outdoor space! If you are throwing a late summer outdoor party, you may be interested in freshening up your outdoor living space. Now is a fantastic time to purchase outdoor furniture and rugs as the season is coming to a close. Below are photos from a clients outdoor living space we worked on last summer. We opted for cool blues, aquas, and greens for the overall color scheme. These are great colors to use as people associate them with being calm as well as with the beach. These are all good feelings to have while enjoying your outdoor space!

Summer Decor Trends

Matte finishes are huge for 2018. Incorporating these muted finishes into your home’s decor is a great way to make a statement and let something like your faucet or hardware stand out in a new and interesting way. Although bronze and brushed nickel are always great, safe, go to’s, this relatively new trend can really make a splash in your decor. Matte black finishes are our personal favorite.

Mid-century modern is another trend we are seeing all over and will certainly go on into this summer. This style is incorporating retro inspired pieces mostly from the 60’s/70’s era into your space. This style trend is a great one because you can seamlessly incorporate it among your other more current pieces.

Our final decor trend is colored stainless steel appliances. Stainless steel has been the standard in gorgeous kitchens for years. Now black and slate colored stainless has been gaining on the tried and true classic stainless steel. It is an interesting twist on the original where you still get the classic look and durability while also adding new edge and style.

Fashion Guest Blogger: Amber Philpott, WKYT News Anchor

Amber Philpott, anchor for WKYT shares some great advice for what to wear on and off camera.  Enjoy!

I find it comical that I am writing a blog entry on fashion, I often tell people it’s funny that I work in a business where hair, makeup and clothes matter because I seem to not know a lot about any of them.  I have never been a fashionista, one who keeps up with the latest trends and fads.  What I do know is that I like what I see.  In fact this time of year is very hard for me because the weather can still feel like winter, but all of those great summer looks are calling my name as I walk through the mall.

I think style and personal fashion should not be about trends and fads, rather what makes you comfortable and beautiful.  I am quite conservative in how I shop and what I choose; I am the type of girl who would wear pearls every single day if she could.  Pearls are timeless, classic and can be casual or dressy!

For this entry though I wanted you to have some expert advice from a woman who I rely on to help me look the best I can each and every day on WKYT.  We have an image consultant that helps us determine the right look in terms of clothing, color choice, makeup and even hairstyle.  For someone like myself I truly appreciate the help that she provides me, it means I don’t have to study magazines to figure out what I should look like.

Our consultant is Sherry Ailor with Focus Image Consulting, when I asked her what the hottest trend for spring is this year, she said Yellow!  Here is her advice for all of us out there that are a little fashion clueless!

"Yellow is a great color for every stylish woman and fashion Diva to invite into their wardrobe this spring and summer. Consider a great piece of clothing in a yellow shade or tone that flatters your skin tone, eyes and hair. Or, a yellow accessory such as a great piece of jewelry, a scarf, a belt, shoes or purse would be a great addition too. It is all out there just waiting for the right person to incorporate it into their wardrobe.

Yellow is not only an on trend color for spring it's actually the color of happiness, and optimism, of enlightenment and creativity, sunshine and spring. In almost every culture yellow represents sunshine, happiness, and warmth. This alone is good reason to add a little yellow to your fashionable life."

Sherry also says it’s “Game On,” when it comes to a popular spring trend this year.  She says sports and fitness are not only influencing our health, but now it is becoming part of our wardrobe.  Sherry says this spring you will find sporting designs that are wearable, but also allow you to show off all of the hard work that you have been putting in at the gym everyday!  She says taking care of your body and soul is very important and finding that right outfit for this spring might just help you feel even better about yourself.

 Happy Shopping!
