How to Decorate with Horse-themed Items

With Derby being right around the corner, we were inspired to give some tips on decorating with horse-themed items in your home. If you are local, then you know how important horse culture is to the beautiful state of Kentucky. It is always good to choose art and decor that means something to you or speaks to where you come from. You want to make sure not to overdo the amount of horse-themed pieces in your home because it can easily go from being tasteful to being kitschy. Below we have shown some fantastic examples of how to incorporate equine art throughout your space without feeling to “theme” like.

Painted Glass Vases

We all know mom’s love gifts that come from the heart and have their loved one’s personal touches on them. This is why hand painted glass vases are a great gift option this Mother’s Day! Simply buy a few vases in her favorite shape and use a few of her favorite colors to paint along the lower half of the vase. One of the simplest designs to create is small multicolored dots like what is shown in one of the photos below.

Home Offices: How to Make them Decorative and Functional

Create Effective Storage

To create a functional home office it is important to have adequate storage options throughout the space. Both open and closed storage is ideal to have so you are able to easily access items you use the most and the rest can be tucked away. One great way to accomplish this is with built ins. These will allow you to have both closed cabinet storage, as well as open shelving. Another way to create functional storage is with a free standing shelving unit. You can add baskets for the items you wish to be hidden and have the rest open.

Add Personal Touches

Adding personal touches throughout your home office is another great way to create a decorative and functional space. Just because the area is designated for work, does not mean it needs to be dull or boring. Adding items like family photos in frames, artwork, and pieces with your favorite colors throughout the space will create a positive environment for you to happily work in.

Maximize your Lighting

Lighting is important in every room of your home but it is especially important in your home office. No matter what type of work you are doing, good lighting is vital in a workspace. When choosing which room or space to make your home office, choose one with the most natural lighting. The last thing anyone wants to do is work in a dark space. If you do not have the luxury of great natural light in your space, add overhead as well as lamp and task lighting anywhere that you can.

Tile to the Ceiling

Don’t be afraid to take your backsplash tile all the way to the ceiling! These photos show great examples of how this can turn out wonderfully. Tiling all the way to the ceiling really plays up the height of your space which is always good. It also creates a beautiful and unexpected statement to the room.

Herringbone Patterns

Another hot trend going on in kitchen backsplashes right now is using a herringbone pattern. This is a nice departure from the average brickwork pattern used in a lot of backsplashes. This pattern creates a lot of movement in your space which is a great way to add interest. It is also a nice way to add pattern without choosing tiles that are patterned themselves which can get outdated very quickly.
