Holiday Decorating 101: The Mantle

Decide on Colors

homedit.com
When decorating your mantle for the holidays, first choose your colors. Some good go-to color schemes for your mantle include red and green, white and silver, silver and gold, and earth tones. This does not mean you must stick to only two colors, it is just a good place to start and you can add in other accents from there.

Play up the Height

Another helpful tip for decorating your mantle is to play up the height if you have it. This can be accomplished by choosing tall items like trees for your mantle as well as some shorter ones so you can see the variation.

Holiday Decorating 101: The Tree

1. Start with a Full and Fluffed Tree
christmas.bizannouncer.com
Before you begin decorating your tree, you must first make sure your tree is full and fluffed. Chances are it has been sitting in a box for the past year and needs to be brought back to life. Make sure there are no obvious gaps or flat areas. This will give you a great base to start with.
2. Choose Large Pieces for your Ornaments and other Decor.
Polka Dots and Rosebuds Interiors
One of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to tree decorating is choosing pieces that are too small. You don't want to end up with a cluttered mess of tiny items that get lost in the shuffle. This is not to say you need to pack the entire tree with oversized items, it is just a good place to start. It will create impact where you want it to be.

3. Fill in with Picks and other Flare!
Polka Dots and Rosebuds Interiors
Once you have all of your larger pieces in place and you have a good balance going, you can start adding your smaller items like picks to the tree. This will finish off the look and give you a cohesive and balanced feel. The photos below are great examples of how to use larger pieces in your tree, and then incorporate your smaller items around them.

Hot Decor Gifts for the Holiday Season

When buying decor gifts this holiday season, a good rule of thumb is to keep it simple and functional. You don’t want to get into buying things that someone would need to pick out themselves. It can be difficult to know what type of throw pillows or lamps someone may find attractive for example. Below are some great ideas that are, for the most part, universally liked and useful. They are also items that can go seamlessly with existing decor.

Picture Frames
craftyteacherlady.com
Picture frames are always a fantastic gift option for this season. You can always pick out a nice looking photo frame and give it to someone on its own. Getting a photo printed and placing it inside is a nice, personal touch as well. Frames are something that can always stand to be updated or added to in anyone’s home which is why this makes for a fabulous gift.

Trays

Another great gifting option are trays. Trays have many different uses in the home. They can be used on ottomans or coffee tables to hold decorative items and remotes. Another great use for a tray is in the kitchen to hold containers, or even in the bathroom to hold products and other decorative items. The trick is knowing what style the person you are buying for is drawn to. Whether it be more traditional or more contemporary, there are countless options on the market to choose from.

Bar Set

One piece of home decor that has gotten popular again recently are bar carts. While we wouldn't recommend buying one for someone, (unless they have specifically mentioned it of course) purchasing a bar set is a great addition to a bar cart or even just to the kitchen counter. There are all different styles of bar sets, but a simple silver set is a great go to!

Coasters

Finally, coasters are always a great gift idea. These are useful for any household and can also be very appealing and decorative. Pictured below are some great coaster options. The black and white set are Kate Spade and are available at BedBathandBeyond.com These, and others like it are a great choice for your stylish friends and family. The other set we have pictured are from shutter fly and they are customizable in that you can upload personal photos and have them made. This is a great option for those more sentimental!

3 Things We are Thankful for at PD&R

Our Amazing Clients

dearlillieblog.blogspot.com

Words cannot even describe how thankful we are for all of our amazing clients and supporters of PD&R!  Because of your love and support, we have a variety of clients spread throughout the country with whom we love to work.  We get big smiles on our faces whenever a past client calls about a new project — it means so much when you choose to work with us again! We are lucky to have such loyal, and all-around fantastic clients.

Our Community

society6.com

While our projects take us out of Lexington more often these days, we are still incredibly thankful for the community where PD&R is rooted. It is our pleasure to participate in and support community endeavors. Some of our best friends and clients were first introduced to us at events like the Junior League’s Hollyday Market, the Home Builders Association’s Grand Tour of Homes, or through local business networking organizations. We have a great sense of pride for this city and love to see it shine!

Allowing us to do what we Love

yaochengdesign.com

Last but not least, we are thankful that each of you allows us to do what we love every single day. In 2009, PD&R started out with a dream and a prayer, and because of your projects and referrals we are still here today. On a daily basis, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to do work that we enjoy. Without you, we would not have this blessing and we thank you for that a thousand times over.

Stay Away from Tall Centerpieces

prettyprovidence.com
One mistake that is often made is choosing a centerpiece that is too tall. Although many tall centerpieces can be very beautiful, this can get in the way of allowing all of your guests to see and talk to each other. These are some good examples of centerpieces that wont get in the way!

How to Organize your Dining Room for a Family Meal

Declutter

Polka Dots & Rosebuds Interiors
If your dining room has turned into a catch-all for clutter, it may be difficult for your family to be motivated to have a sit down dinner there. Step one in organizing your dining room is to declutter. This means getting rid of anything that isn’t necessary for the space. Once you have tackled this feat, the rest is simple.

Create/Utilize Storage

iheartorganizing.blogspot.com
It is very helpful to have useful storage options in your dining room. A great way to accomplish gaining some added storage is to invest in a sideboard or buffet. This will create a space for things like china, cutlery, and any other item that can be pulled out, and used in the room. This will also create a place that can be decorated to add personality to the space.

Set the Table

definingdesigns.blogspot.com
While this sounds like an obvious step, it is often forgotten about until right before a meal. Having a nice table set at any given moment is a great motivator to actually sit down and eat at the table. You can go as simple or elaborate as you choose for the table settings. A simple runner with a centerpiece makes for a great start to decorating your table. Then just add in your plates, napkins, and silverware and you will be ready for a family meal any day of the week!
